INTRODUCTION TO CHESS AND CHESS PIECES (CHESSMAN)

Firstly, we need to know some basics about chess like what is chess? How does it help us and so on..

So then what are we waiting for?Let's get started!!

1. What is chess?
Chess is a two player game played on a check board containing 64 squares.
It is a strategic game played by millions of people worldwide.

2. How does playing chess help us?
Chess is a strategic game. It requires tremendous concentration and decision making abilities and also helps you improve them. It helps you plan in a decisive manner and concentrate on things around you easily.

How do you play chess?
Each player in chess has a total of 16 pieces. They consist of 8 pawns, 2 rooks, 2 bishops, 2 knights, a queen and mainly the king. White always starts first in the game of chess. So before we proceed to the movement of each pieces, you will have to know how to arrange a chessboard properly.

ARRANGEMENT
The white rook is supposed to be kept in the a1 square. The white pieces are supposed to be arranged on the 1st and 2nd square whereas black should be arranged on the 7th and 8th row.
Chess boards are supposed to be arranged in the exact manner as shown above.

CHESS PIECES

The chess pieces are also called chessman. There are six types of pieces in chess i.e Pawn, Bishop, Knight, Rook, Queen, King.

The Pawn
-There are 8 pawns for each player in the game of chess and each pawn carry one point.
-They are capable of moving forward only one step at a time except at the beginning where they can either move one or two step.
-A pawn captures in a diagonally forward one step left or right. Refer the pic below.
-The pawn can also be promoted to any piece( the queen, knight, bishop or rook) depending upon your decision or wish if it reaches the other end of the board.
Ex: If a white pawn reaches the other end of the board i.e the black colony, then the pawn can promote into any one of the piece mentioned above.
-Pawns may not  seem like a valuable piece, but they are one of the most crucial pieces in chess especially in endgames.
The Bishop
-There are 2 bishops for each player in the game of chess and each bishop carry 3 points each.
-The bishop move diagonally across the board.
-Each player has one bishop which move diagonally only on white squares and another which move diagonally only on black squares.
-They also capture pieces diagonally. (Refer the pic below)

The Knight
-The knight has a horse head. It is a very crucial piece in chess. Each player has two knight, worth 3 points each.
-The knight moves in a L-shape. It can either move two steps horizontally and then one step vertically or two steps vertically and one step horizontally.
-If there is any piece of the opponent at the landing square , then the knight can capture that piece.
-The knight is most unique piece as it can jump over pieces while jumping.

The Rook
-  Each player in chess has 2 rooks which are worth 5 points each.
-  They move and capture pieces both horizontally and vertically..
-  They cannot jump over pieces on their way.

The Queen
- The queen is the most powerful piece in the game of chess.
-  Each player has one queen which is worth 9 points each and is placed next to the king while arranging.
-  They can move and capture pieces like a bishop (diagonally) and like a rook (horizontally and vertically).
The King
- The king is the most important piece in chess.
- Each player has one king which they are supposed to protect.
- The pieces on the kings' are supposed to protect the king from getting killed (checkmate) by the opponent pieces.
- The king can move and capture pieces one step in any direction.
- The game ends if the king is killed (checkmate).

KING'S GAMBIT

Gambit is an opening in chess, often played by white, who sacrifices a piece (often a pawn)  with the hope to gain a more prominent position.  King's Gambit is one of the most aggressive and powerful openings in chess at the amateur level. The main aim of the King's gambit is that the white tries to weaken the central pawns of black so that they are able to capture central power. Its popularity declined in the 19th century when chess masters discovered plenty of ways through which black can have an equal position as white.
